CIBACS World History Outline

Welcome to World History. This class is a survey class in World History. After a brief look at the foundations of Democracy in Greece & Rome, this class will study major historical events from the Enlightenment in the 1500’s to Current Day issues. This class is a highly involved class. Students are encouraged to participate and share their opinions and ideas in an open environment.

 

Units of Study will include:

            Fall Semester

1.      Major Problems in the World Today

2.      Ancient Civilizations

3.      Rise of Democratic Ideas – Ancient Greece and Rome

4.      Democratic Revolutions and Milestones- The ages of Enlightenment and Renaissance

5.      Industrial Revolution

6.      Imperialism and Independence

 

Spring Semester

1.      World War 1

2.      Rise of totalitarian States

3.      World War 2

4.      Postwar World – The Cold War – Technology

 

CIBACS requirements:

1.      Maintain at least a C in the class.

2.      Complete all assigned CIBACS projects on time.

3.      Participate actively and equally with the other members of your team.

 

CIBACS project:

The Sophomore project is called “On Ramp”.  Teams compete in a research and design simulation for various CIBACS business partners.  Your teams tour a business in November, research and design a new product for that business by January, and then investigate that product’s affect on the day-to-day operations of the business partner.  The final presentations occur in April.

 

 

Assignments

1.      Homework: Homework be assigned frequently to complete or re-enforce what was learned in class.

2.      Quizzes: One quiz per Unit will be given a few weeks into that Unit to monitor progress of students.

3.      Class Work: Class work will be given on a weekly basis. Incentives will be given to finish this class work in class. If not, it is to be completed for homework.

4.      Projects: Students typically have one major project per Unit. Projects and due dates will be discussed at the beginning of each Unit.

5.      Exams: Each Unit covered will have a culminating Unit Exam. Exams can be a combination of any of the following: (True/False, multiple choice, short answer and essay). Instructor may have a project replace the Unit Exam.

6.      Silent Sustained Reading – SSR  Students receive 100 SSR points to stat each semester. Silent Sustained reading will be done at the beginning of every block period unless otherwise noted. Students need to bring their own reading material. All students without reading material, not reading, or participating in S.S.R. will be docked 5pts for each occurrence.

Grading:

            The total number of points acquired will determine a student’s grade in this course. Students will receive points for homework assignments, notes, projects, presentations, quizzes, Unit Exams, classroom participation, and SSR.  An approximate total for semester points will be announced toward the end of the semester. Students who are truant will receive “F” grades on any work or activity missed.  Grades will be based on the following scale:

90 – 100%

B =

80 – 89%

C =

70 – 79%

D =

60 – 69%

F =

0 – 59%
